Teams & Coaches
Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club has a long history of developing both great young volleyball players and great young people. Since 1998 Canuck has had over 2000 male and female athletes play high level volleyball here at the Volleydome. Many going on to play at colleges and universities all over North America as well as Provincial and National team programs. Many of them contributed to the numerous Provincial and National Championship banners that hang here in the Dome. A number of factors are responsible for this success, but probably the largest amount of credit should go to the amazing group of coaches and technical resource people that are the backbone of Canuck Stuff. Our coaching staff this year has an unprecidented number of former national team and Pro volleyball players, all anxious to pass along their experience and "Love of the Game" to the next generation of hard working athletes. Meet Our Coaches is a new web page containing information and Bios of Coaching Staff and is now availble. (We are continuing to update this page as we collect accurate information from our coaches and technical staff.) Listed below are the teams and respective coaches Canuck Stuff is planning to run for the 2012 season.
One of the distinct advantages of a club like Canuck is the high calibre of coaches it attracts because of it's history and reputation for developing great athletes, and great young people. We are planning to run 10 teams for the 2012 season and we know each team will not only benefit from great coaching but will be exposed to the wealth of knowledge and experience of our Technical Committee consisting of a group or former CIS, National Team and many Pro volleyball players, as they help with the selection process, assist at team practices and offer positional clinics to Canuck athletes throughout the season. Please take a minute to look over the impressive Bios of the Coaching Staff that call Canuck Stuff and The Volleydome "home".

Her coaching is focused on high expectations and goals based on technical development, work ethic and team work in a positive environment. She also strongly believes in the benefits of the sport as part of a player's growth in life.
"I hope to pass along my passion for the sport of volleyball to future athletes. Outside from my engineering work, I sleep and breath volleyball. If I'm not playing, I'm coaching, if I'm not coaching, I'm thinking or watching volleyball... or simply, hanging out with Volleyball friends." - Santisouk

Doug Hill
Doug is fairly new to the Canuck Stuff club starting as the assistant coach of the U14 Girls Canuck team last year, but is not new to coaching competitive athletes as he has coaching experience in competitive swimming, baseball, soccer and hockey as well. Doug has also worked as the head coach of the Olds High School boys senior team and a Calgary Women's club team. Doug played with the U of C Dinos under John Paulson and Greg Ryan as well as played club volleyball for 15 years after University. My philosophy is definitely athlete centric, where I prefer to focus on the player’s development. I believe if you focus on the basics of every skill, try and do the skills right every time success will come. I respect that athletes and their parents spend a vast amount of time committing to sports they love. My hope is to develop the athletes desire to play and compete hard by offering a positive environment to learn in.

Brian Gullekson /
2012 will mark Brian's 12th season coaching volleyball at Canuck and in the High School system, although it also marks his 33rd year involved in athletics as either a coach, official or administrator. Brian is a Level II NCCP certified coach in both Softball and Volleyball and spent 16 years officiating Basketball at all levels including community, ACAC, CIAU and the World Basketball League. Brian believes strongly in the lifelong benefits children gain when they participate in competitive sports as witnessed in his own children as well as many others in his 30 + years in sports. Over the years Brian's teams have earned many championship banners, and many of the athletes he has coached have gone to play at the post secondary level, but his greatest pride is in watching these young athletes grow to become great young men and women. One of the Canuck parents wrote this about Brian:
"Evidence of the strength of character Brian builds within the boys he coached and his high expectations both on the court, and outside volleyball, was never more obvious than when seven players he coached over the years 2004 -2008 were all nominated for the 2008 Al Taylor Award for outstanding 2009 Senior High School Varsity Boys Volleyball Player."

The Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club and The Volleydome are proudly running a joint venture program called Project 16 aimed at developing Bantam age (born 1998 or 1999) volleyball players at the competitive club level.
This program will work with 40 male and 40 female athletes who will practice / train 3 times per week from late November through to the May long weekend under the direction of Don and Mylene Saxton, who will be running the program along with 8 other coaches.
All of the athletes will receive the same training and play in regular invitational tournaments, with the option of paying additional fees to play in AVA Premier Tournaments, AVA Provincials and Nationals.
The focus of Project 16 will be to expose more athletes to the kind of extensive training and superior coaching that will give them the opportunity to become successful school and competitive players through to their graduation in 2016 and beyond. These groups of athletes will practise together, play various positions and play games and tournaments with various team mates in an attempt to broaden their volleyball experience beyond that which is available with a regular 10 or 12 person club team.
This type of program is very much in line with the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development Program, but is by no means new to Canuck Stuff or the Volleydome. We have used this program in the past with outstanding results (National Championships at the juvenile level), and are looking forward to kick starting another group of amazing young athletes.
