Volleydome News Aug. 25 – the 2005 Volleydome summer camps are drawing to a close. Over fifty young athletes participated in the afternoon session in the last week, the largest of all the half day camps this summer.
Paige Ridout, a grade 8 student at Harold Pana Junior High was one of the many young athletes who took in a Volleydome camp this summer.
“I really liked the camp because I got to spike a lot”, said Paige. “I like to spike because I get to jump and hit the ball as hard as I can.” Paige, who played on her school team last year, is once again hoping to make her school team and then pursue bigger goals. “This is my first year playing but I really like it and after school I want to play club volleyball as well.”
Summer camps although extremely popular with the girls, saw quite a few boys take to the courts as well. For some of the boys it wasn’t just about spiking the ball.
“I really like the camp because I got to set the ball a lot”, said Keegan Haidy, a grade 7 student from Madeleine D” Houet. “I like to set because I can control the court and what’s going on”.
For Keegan, having the right mindset will go a long way in the sport. “I hope to be able to play really good volleyball one day as a setter because volleyball is a great sport”.
This is the final week of camps where over 500 young Calgary and area athletes bumped, set and spiked their way to better skills. Next on the agenda is the much anticipated VolleyballAcademy starting Sept. 6th at the Volleydome. The Academy, in its second season, already has nearly one hundred registrants.
