It looks as if the Volleydome will not have an indoor beach for the next couple of years, but hopefully this will lead to a bigger, better volleyball (multisport?) facility in the long run, (including more beach courts we hope). We are ironing out the details, but it looks as if NSD North will be taking over the north part of the beach plus the training and deck area at the north east end of the Volleydome starting in May of this year. They will be putting in a 5000 sq. ft. professional training and fitness area for athletes of all sports and ages. The south 1/2 of the sand will be converted to a 5th wood court to be used by NSD for training during the summer and by the Volleydome for leagues and kids programs during the fall and winter. Sorry to all those beach teams that have learned to love the feel of warm sand in your toes and under your creaky joints during the winter - you'll have to get your sand games in during the summer like everyone else for the next couple of years.
In the longer term both the Volleydome and NSD are interested in developing a larger facility in this area and hopefully, together, that will become more financially and politically viable. We will be approaching the City of Calgary with some of our ideas in the near future and hopefully can begin the process of creating something better for Calgary's volleyball community. If you have engineering or architectural skills and would like to help in the design process then by all means let us know - dsaxton@volleydome.net
