Junior Canucks 2020/2021

Junior Canucks is a relatively new program entering it's fourth year.

In the 2019/2020 season we offered U12-U15 Girls programs and U12-U15 Boys programs. These groups included 30+ athletes each which added up to over 240 athletes in the club. Those athletes learned the game together in practice settings and then split into teams of 10 or less for local and provincial level tournaments. All teams developed significantly in terms of coachability, volleyball skills, teamwork, and competitiveness at the provincial level but most importantly they acquired a stronger love of the game. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 Pandemic the season was cut short in mid-March.

Right now it is uncertain whether Volleyball Alberta will be hosting tournaments for the 2020/2021 season. We will update this page once we know more about that. If not we will run an in-house Jr Canuck program where our athletes are in small cohorts and can compete among each other.

A component that we are very excited to add this year is Beach Volleyball. Each of the Jr Canuck groups will have 2 indoor practices a week at the GYM (293057 James Jones Way) and 1 beach volleyball practice a week at the Volleydome (2825 24th Ave NW Calgary). The Volleydome facility now has 2 indoor sand courts and a large training area. We believe that Beach Volleyball is a great way for volleyball players to develop all of their skills and tactics. It also helps with vertical jump and agility. Because beach volleyball is 2 vs 2 it will also give our smaller cohort groups the opportunity to compete regularly.

2020/2021 Fall & Tryout Information

Normally we would be running Fall Skills clinics alongside Canuck. However, this year we are restricted to smaller cohorts. Right now we are only running Programs for our former Jr Canuck athletes. If you are a new athlete who is interested in trying out for/ joining the Jr Canuck program during the 2020/2021 club season (we assume this will start at the end of November), please fill out the following application form and send it to: jrcanucks@volleydome.net

Junior Canucks Basic Principles

Vision
We created this program to give more kids the opportunity to be part of a travel team and play the game of volleyball at the provincial level. This program is all about education and development. The idea is to educate the athletes about sportsmanship, discipline, competitiveness, teamwork, cooperation, and how to empower each other. Throughout the course of the season, the development component will focus on the overall athleticism of all the participants first and foremost and then on their volleyball skills. The idea is to spread the love of the game and the love of activity to as many kids as possible. We believe that with sustained hard work and dedication to improve, winning will happen.

Mission
Junior Canucks will provide great coaches who are extremely passionate and dedicated to the education of athletes when it comes to the fundamental skills of volleyball and being part of a team. These coaches will care about the kids not only as athletes but as people first. We pride ourselves in providing great facilities, administration, leadership and communication with parents and athletes.

Philosophy
As mentioned above Canuck Juniors is all about Education and Development.

  • 1. We would like the ideals of sportsmanship, discipline, positive attitude and work ethic to be the main focus of this program. This should be exhibited by both the athletes and the coaches.

  • 2. We want to develop not only volleyball players but well rounded athletes. There will be training components included every week with the practices at the GYM facility.

  • 3. We believe in having larger groups of athletes who all learn the game of volleyball together. This gives athletes the chance to be exposed and to adapt to several different teammates and coaches. It gives the athletes more access to a group of coaches with more overall knowledge of the game and several different ways of teaching the various skills. It also gives coaches more opportunities to work on specialized skills with the groups that particularly need them (example: setters working on setting).

  • 4. This is a developmental program. Although equal playing time cannot be promised, we understand that all athletes should have the opportunity to be in game situations in order to develop throughout the course of the season. We find that athletes who attend the most practices do tend to develop the quickest, and sometimes earn more playing time.
